US: Pigs give us something to smile about
Scientists in the US have taken their first step to produce replacement teeth for humans, using the cells of pigs.
Using well known tissue engineering techniques, the scientists have produced toothsubstances -- dentin and enamel -- from pig stemcells.
It's the first time such growth has been achieved and Dr PAMELA YELICK from the ForsythInstitute in Boston says within 10 or 15 years, teeth for humans could be grown and usedin a person's jaw.
She's told ABC Radio it's the very first step towards the process of bio-engineering human teeth.
Dr YELICK says they hope to identify which non-human stemcells would be most suitablefor growing teeth and work out the least invasive way of obtaining those cells and usingthem.
She says they hope their immediate findings can be used to produce dentin or enamelto repair teeth.
